Emails Pretend to Announce iPhone 5, Actually Deliver Malware, Phishing
MacRumors and TUAW report that there’s a new batch of emails going around that pretend to be delivered by Apple to announce the iPhone 5, but that clicking through on them will either deliver malware to the user’s computer or trigger a form that attempts to steal the user’s personal information, including App Store and Apple ID account info. Though the Apple faithful will spot Photoshop errors and fakery unbefitting an Apple promo in the image above, it’s easy to imagine one letting one’s guard down and distractedly clicking through. As always, clicking through links from untrusted email accounts is never a good idea.
The latest email (pictured above) passes itself off as an Apple launch email for the iPhone 5 … It cobbles together various photos from the internet and entices users to click on “Learn More”. The learn more link, however, links to a Windows executable which we presume to be malware (virus, trojan, keylogger, etc…), so readers are warned to avoid clicking on any links from these emails.
